what do you do about possible lost items?

I have a client that has re-booked and his dogs are coming to stay tomorrow. He just messaged me asking if I had a fork that he thinks was left (to get food out of the can). He also mentioned it was part of a set he keeps in his rv. I have not seen it and he stayed months ago now without mention of it, Is there something I should be doing about this? If I had known I would have looked directly after that stay. But I have not seen it and heard about the issue until now (months later). Just looking for an opinion.

I'm sure he just noticed he is missing his fork and just decided to ask you just in case you had it. It doesn't really sound like he is accusing you of taking the fork. Just tell him you have not seen the fork and don't make a big deal out of it. I mean if you would have seen it once the dog left I'm sure you would have told him he left it behind.

It sounds like you have already answered your own question. I think you could probably tell him nearly verbatim what you have written here and be done with it. (You may wish to omit the part about him not mentioning it during the intervening months.)

If you feel convicted, you could offer to pay for the fork. It will likely be only a few dollars and maybe worth the money to stay in his good graces. However, I do not think that you should feel obligated in any way.
