Report Cards: Should they be mandatory?

Personally, I love spending time with the dogs I have the pleasure of visiting every day. If I'm not on a run with them, we're playing outside and I am in the grass interacting with them the entire time. I bring a backpack with me on my runs just to carry my phone so that when my 20 minute timer on my watch goes off I remember to take some pictures. I understand that this situation is not the same for all pet sitters, everyone has their own way of doing things. My way happens to be very involved and I keep my phone and all other distractions aside from the animal I am taking care of out of my mind. I don't want that to sound too dramatic, it's mostly because I don't want to get my phone sweaty and smudged.. At the end of my drop-in visit, walk, or morning/evening updates for house-sitting clients I always attach the pictures I have taken with a message summarizing how everything went. That often includes whether or not they did #1 & #2, got a lot of exercise, were fed, had treats, were well-behaved, etc. I would like to emphasize that I do all of this AFTER I am done with the visit, not during. This kind of does the same job, if not more than, the report card is meant to provide without the pretty formatting. Is there any chance the report cards can be made not mandatory? I'd really prefer to spend my time taking care of the animals whose owners invited me to do so instead of being attached to my phone.

I like the app but I don't think it should be mandatory, I think it should be a badge. There have been a wide range of experiences with it. As far as I know, it will become mandatory soon. There is more discussion going on about Report Card on the When does the Report Card system go into effect? thread.

That would be a great idea!

Hey Sean - I love the report cards, so do my clients, and for me it only takes seconds to complete at the end of the visit, and what I would text in the past is now included on the report card. I've seen many negative comments since the report card was released but I remain a strong supporter. Many folks don't have compatible phones or work in area's where cell phone coverage is horrible so its an issue for them, so we'll see what happens later this month to see if they make it mandatory. If they make it mandatory it would be nice if we the walker/sitter had the ability to easily modify the booking to accommodate changes in schedule dates. And they need to seriously fix the battery killer as this also causes a lot of problems in the field.

Hi Sean: The report cards take a bit to get used to...I'm still getting in my groove of how to best work with it! Saving everything to the end of the visit seems to work best. I understand Rover's requirement for the report card, as it gives total transparency to the services (walking, drop-ins), and for the most part, my clients seem happy with it. My older, "less connected" clients could care less about it and prefer the hand written notes I've always left at the end of my visits in the past. I believe in customer service, so I'm trying to find a way to keep all of my clients happy, and at the same time fulfilling my requirements as a Rover sitter. I still find the report card system to be glitchy at times, and that the report card has barely matched from the app to the one that shows as a link in messaging. I'm still uncomfortable with the "big brother" feeling I get from using it, but if Rover wants to track my dull life....let them! I think the report cards will be a work in progress for a while, even after they become mandatory, especially with new cell phones and phone updates, etc.
