A growl is a warning. For some reason they feel threatened or fear you are threatened.

By growling, the dog is communicating, which is a good thing. Sometimes, it's part of play. Other times, he/she is uncomfortable and growling as a warning. The dog may be voicing please stop or please go away. This could be due to protectiveness, anxiousness, and/or nervousness, fear, insecurity, guarding behavior, offensive aggression.
