When you get your first gig, how do I ask about location and times?

Hey guys,

I'm absolutely new to Rover...I signed up last week and got approval to be a dog walker. I think I screwed everything up. So yesterday, I was standing in the line at the supermarket and I got this dog walking gig offer to check in on this lady's 2 dogs. I got a text.....and it was a rather long message and she needed 10 check-ins over 3 weeks on very specific days. I didn't know what to say...I was unprepared because while I am currently without a job right now, I am taking 2 online graduate courses and 2 face-to-face courses that take up most of the day Friday and Saturday...I had no idea how far away this gig was and I live in Houston (I just moved here a month ago and literally this place is absolutely gigantic, obviously bc it is the 4th largest city in the US). I didn't know what to say....I need the money and the Rover emails say to sound cheerful and upbeat and so I said "Yes, absolutely!" Come to find out, she wants check-ins mid day but she was willing to work with me on the 2 days I have face-to-face classes. Today, she finally gave me her address and it's outside of Houston, a 13 mile/30 min drive from where I live.

Guys...I panicked and left a message saying I was backing out. It dawned on me on the way over to the meet and greet that I can't do 10 check-ins at this distance. I'm a poor grad student....desperate for work...but the fuel costs are just too much.

Questions for y'all......

  1. What do you say when someone offers you a gig but they don't provide the when & where?
  2. Can I adjust my Rover profile to only accept gigs within a 6 mile radius? I know that sounds lame, but in downtown Houston where I live, that's dense...I can do 6 miles. She said Rover said I live 8 miles away but I live 13. That totally sucks!
  3. Do y'all get paid for meet & greets?

The first thing you need to do is adjust your service radius to something more manageable and realistic for your other time commitments. Since I don't provide offsite services, I can't see how it is done on your profile, but I've seen many sitters here discuss the various distances they'll go. You should be able to take it down to 6 miles or even less. Rover's measurement system may not be terribly exact, given that it is only zipcode-based. As you are well aware, the client may live at the furthest point away from your zipcode, so I'd go on the low side for a service radius.

When a client contacts you, just ask before you set up a M&G. If they're outside your service area, tell them. It shouldn't count against you with Rover.

The question of being paid for M&Gs has been asked here before. I know of no way to charge for them on Rover. You have to accept that this time is a "cost of doing business."
