What is Overnight Booking?

When you book a sitter for 6 overnights at the owner's home what does that mean? Does that cover six 24 hour periods and what is included in that? Can the sitter charge you $300 more for caring for the dog during the day (totaling $600)?

I contacted a sitter for 6 overnights at my place for 2 dogs since we will be going on vacation. The Book it Now price on http://Rover.com showed me: Sitter's rate: $25 Standard Rate x 6 nights x 2 dogs Total: $300 But you imagine my surprise when she came back at me asking for $300 more! This is the message I received from her, "I was thinking about the price and I usually charge $50 a night when I leave during the day so I would actually need to charge $50 for the day too since I'll be staying. Let me know if that's ok. $600 total." Didn't seem right!

If the rate is $25 dollars a day then the total would be $150. If they offer a discount rate if you stay more than 5 days like me I charge $20 then it would be $120. It is not extra for overnight unless you state differently.

I'm sorry that happened to you, Maria. That seems a bit unethical on the part of the sitter because Rover bases its fees on a 24-hour period. It should make no difference if the sitter comes and goes or if they stay at your house, it's still a one-day charge.

Thank you. I just talked customer support and they told me that a sitter can adjust their prices to whatever they want, and I should just ignore the ones that are trying to charge more. However, I find this wrong because if that's the case - what is the point of having prices listed if they can ignore them.

Almost all of the sitters I contacted asked for more money - either for gas, or for the during the day care of my dogs on top of the overnight charges. One asked even for $831 total even though her overnight rate was $24 for overnight and $3 for a second dog. Seriously?!

The Sitter should charge based on their rates advertised. Sometimes there are other factors that would require an additional charge (Like I sometimes have to adjust my rate depending on pick-up and drop-off times) but it does seem unethical that they would double their usual rate. The over-night rate should cover a stay at your home for a 24 hour period (as a sitter that's what it means for me) but other sitters do vary on how they charge for their stays. Mine also includes walks and travel but some sitters charge for these extras. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with sitters in your area and hope you're able to find one who is more up front about their rates.

Rover doesn't allow much customization when it comes to pricing. It's possible that the sitter offers other services such as walking, visiting the clients home to check on animals, and so forth. If the sitter is asked to stay for the full 24 hours and not be able to leave periodically to service other clients, it is in the sitters right to be compensated for that loss if they choose. Maybe the sitter's pricing is $25 a night with allowance of being able to leave during the day to take on other jobs. If so, it should be reflected in the sitter's profile. The pet sitter should have also elaborated further during your conversation if it was not in the profile. I mainly provide boarding in my home and I have four slots. If a client requests that I only take their dog and no other clients during the boarding, I inform them that they will have to pay for the available slots as well in order for me to book them. Otherwise, I would only be making $25 a night when I could have made $100 a night. Rover sitters really love taking care of your pets, but for a lot of us, it is not just a hobby of love, it's our business that puts food on the table and pays our bills. If you want the sitter to only focus on your pups for the entire stay, use the search engine to find sitters that only take one client at a time. Ask the sitter directly if they plan on providing other services during your booking. If they don't, great! If they do, be prepared for them to ask for compensation if you don't want them to service others.
