The easiest way for me to answer this question is to say that your call or text is going to your sitters phone and/or their Rover inbox. When you or your sitter enters their phone number rover gives you and the sitter a dummy number. That number is owned by Rover so your messages go through Rover and to your sitter.

Why do you get Rover numbers? Sitters go through a background check so you should never feel unsafe when contacting them, but sitters can receive messages from anyone who has a rover account, so the numbers add as an extra layer of security for them. Sitters want to help you as much as they can but clients asking to talk outside of Rover can raise red flags. I know it can be confusing at first (the numbers confused me when I first started rover as a client,) but please understand that sitters are just trying to be safe if they refuse to exchange numbers.

I know this was posted a few months ago but I think it deserves an answer just in case others have the same question.
